Indian students are working as babysitters to pay for their studies.
The U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education jointly publish the annual Open Doors Report, which records the number of international students enrolled in U.S. universities and pre-academic intensive English programs. According to the 2024 annual Open Doors Report, there are about 39,000 Indian students in Texas, 20,000 in Illinois, 13,500 in Ohio, and 7,000 in Connecticut. About 50 percent of these students are from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Several of them said they are working as babysitters to make ends meet.
A Hyderabad student studying in Ohio said, “I take care of a six-year-old child for about eight hours a day. I get paid $13 per hour.” He added that this job is much better than working at a local store or gas station. Another student studying in Connecticut said that she gets $10 per hour as a babysitter, but her employer also provides her with food and accommodation. The 23-year-old student added, “I have to take care of a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter six days a week. During those six days, the girl’s parents take care of me. On Sundays, I stay at my friend’s house.” In America, students spend about $300 on rent. There, working as a babysitter also saves money on rent. So, the students are quite happy with this job.
